The importance of shedding light on the egregious market practices that occurred in the Torchlight Energy Resources caseMarket makers doubled down by increasing their naked short positions until the very last day of trading, causing the stock to hit a new low on December 8th. ![]() IntroductionMarket Makers created a non-tradable placeholder for the special dividend called MMTLP and traded it on OTC markets without the knowledge or consent of Metamaterials or its shareholders. Shareholders were promised shares in the new Metamaterials company, MMAT, and a special dividend that would convert to cash if the TRCH assets were sold or spun out into a new company. However, it became a target of aggressive and predatory short sellers, causing the company to merge with Canadian tech firm Metamaterials to sell off its oil assets. Torchlight sought to raise capital for drilling projects on their primary asset, 97,500 acres of oil-rich land in Orogrande, Texas. The effect of this change is that the updated model will favor low-float companies over others, all other things being equal. The tale of Torchlight Energy Resources is a cautionary story about the world of finance, where retail investors are often at the mercy of market makers and regulatory bodies. Explanation: If two companies both have 25% short float, but one has 10M unshorted shares floating and the other has 200M unshorted shares floating, the first one is clearly more susceptible to a short squeeze. It can be thought of as a "utilization" metric. This is the raw number of shares available to trade that have not been shorted. JWe have updated our scoring model to include (Float - Short Interest) as a ranking factor. The number ranges from 0 to 100, with higher numbers indicating a higher risk of a short squeeze relative to its peers, and 50 being the average. The scoring model uses a combination of short interest, float, short borrow fee rates, and other metrics. The Short Squeeze Score is the result of a sophisticated, multi-factor quantitative model that identifies companies that have the highest risk of experiencing a short squeeze. When it is time to report, any open short positions are reported, no matter what type of trading venue those shares were acquired on. I was a Tony Stuart fan back when he was racing for Home Depot at the Brickyard, so this boat took on his NASCAR theme. Built from good luaun, she had an inner shell of Styrofoam, go-cart steering components, and a swiveling adjustable plastic seat. Hot Tub #5 was the 4’ x 8’ version of a racing Chris Craft. With no rocker aft, she wasn’t much of a sailboat. #4 also was the first Hot Tub to be tried with a sail. With a 5 hp she could get up on a plane and really fly. #4 got a workout at a Michigan messabout from a tunnel hull builder who tried her with a couple of his engines. I couldn’t find a photo of the original #3 which I built for my niece to use on her familiy’s farm pond. Hot Tub #4 had removable wheels and was only 40” wide. With its thin lauan covering over foam, it appeared to be heavily built, and spectators at the ramps were often amazed to see me launch it by tossing it several feet into the water. #2 was a lightweight at a finished weight of about 45 lb. This Styrofoam box became Hot Tub #2 with the help of a little polyurethane glue, some bamboo skewers, fiberglass, and duct tape to hold things in place until the glue set. A conservation officer informed me that I needed to register my trolling-motor powered “tub.” You can read more details about these boats at ![]() But these designs, which I called Hot Tubs, were all basically little fishing boats for small Indiana lakes, rivers, and back waters. By this time I had started to deviate from the Skimmer design with narrower hulls, different transom angles, and wider twin skids. I decided to build scow #2 from Styrofoam to make it easier for me to throw a boat in the bed of my pickup and go fishing in thin waters. There was at least one sharpie and a 16’ wooden runabout restoration before the next little scow was constructed. I used the study plans in Dynamite’s book to build hull #1, seen below with an electric motor at one of the early Lake Monroe, IN messabouts. According to Dynamite, Phil Bolger claimed these three skids provided considerable lift to the little boat while keeping the little scow from going airborne and doing a slow somersault every time she encountered a good-sized wave. ![]() The photo that sold me showed the Skimmer powered by a 9.9 hp Merc zipping across a lake throwing triple rooster tails from her full-length skids. ![]() The first two scows I constructed I modeled roughly after the Bolger/Payson Skimmer that was featured in Dynamite Payson’s book, Build the New Instant Boats. Perhaps, like me, they will find boatbuilding to be a lifelong hobby and an entry to the worlds of sailing, fishing, cruising, exploring, and/or just messing about in boats. Hopefully some of these photos and comments about these 18 builds will encourage others to try their hands at building one of these easily-constructed and inexpensive small craft on their own or with friends. As of this writing, I have had a hand in constructing 18 of these small scows for myself and as a mentor for others. In this photo essay, I have attempted to capture why I am so intrigued with these little boats and the seemingly endless variations that are possible. I started building 4’ x 8’ scows not long after I built my first Cartopper in 1996. ![]() ![]() ![]() Areas in your home with a Wi-Fi signal strength closer to 0 have a higher-quality connection to your Wi-Fi router than areas with lower readings. Step 5: Interpret and compare your results using the Wi-Fi signal strength table provided earlier in this guide. Repeat this process until you’ve scanned for Wi-Fi signal strength in all areas of concern in your home. Step 4: Rescan another area in your home where you use your Wi-Fi and record your current signal reading again. Reference the table above to determine Wi-Fi signal quality using NetSpot’s dBm signal readings. You want the number to be as close to 0 as possible. We recommend recording both of these readings. The negative number in the Average column is your average signal strength. The negative number in the Signal column is your current Wi-Fi signal strength. If you have a good signal to the 5 GHz network, it will provide faster Wi-Fi speeds than the 2.4 GHz network. This may also be a good opportunity to see how your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks compare. Make sure you select the network you intend to use. Keep in mind your router may be broadcasting two separate Wi-Fi networks, a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Step 2: Find your Wi-Fi network in the list on the home screen by searching for your Wi-Fi’s network name in the SSID column. Step 1: Open NetSpot and ensure you’re in Discover Mode by clicking the DISCOVER tab in the top-left corner of the home screen. This allows you to compare the Wi-Fi signal strengths in your home to find out where your Wi-Fi weak points are. ![]() The only difference is that you move to the areas of your home you’re concerned about with the computer or device. Using NetSpot’s Discover Mode to determine Wi-Fi signal strength throughout your home is almost exactly the same as the Wi-Fi signal strength reading process described earlier. Hopefully, you see your Wi-Fi network at the top of the list. You should now be looking at a list of all the Wi-Fi networks in range of your computer, and the list should be sorted by the strongest average Wi-Fi signal. Click the PAUSE button in the lower-left corner to freeze the results. NetSpot’s data updates in real-time, so the results may fluctuate and switch spots constantly, making things difficult to analyze. We recommend choosing the column heading labeled Average to sort by the average signal level of each network. To sort the list of Wi-Fi networks, click one of the column headings. Step 3: Sort the networks by signal strength. That’s why it’s important to use tools like NetSpot to navigate your way through today’s crowded airwaves. ![]() Overlapping coverage from your neighboring signals isn’t ideal, but it’s also very common. Chances are your device is in range of dozens of Wi-Fi signals, most of which aren’t even coming from your home. If you’re expecting only to see your Wi-Fi network listed in the results, you’re probably in for a shock. In this guide, we show you how to use NetSpot to pick the best Wi-Fi frequency band, select the best Wi-Fi channels, and even find the Wi-Fi dead spots in your home. You can use this info to make changes like picking the best Wi-Fi settings in your router or moving your router to a better place in your home. It can also tell you exactly how strong your own Wi-Fi signal is in every part of your home. So, what does Netspot do? It provides signal strength readings for every Wi-Fi signal that’s in range of your home. NetSpot helps by giving you data specific to your home’s Wi-Fi network, allowing you to get to the bottom of Wi-Fi issues and come up with effective and permanent solutions rather than shooting in the dark with blanket troubleshooting fixes. Random signal drops, sluggish speeds, and spotty Wi-Fi reception all add up to a disappointing internet experience, and it can be hard to know if your troubleshooting efforts are making a difference. NetSpot is a free network analysis tool that can help you improve your home Wi-Fi. ![]() ![]() ![]() And the test no longer measures what occurs to you or what you believe, but it measures what you think you should or shouldn't say or what others think a particular answer means. The tests have been controversial almost from the start, with many saying its results are meaningless.Ĭohen concedes the test has been controversial but says the test is still used today, albeit as part of a battery of other analysis. An ink blot test is a personality test that involves the evaluation of a subjects response to ambiguous ink blots. The thinking behind the test is that the way a subject interprets an image can reveal whether that patient suffers from various psychological disorders. The Rorschach Inkblot Test was developed in the 1920s as a way of analyzing certain aspects of the subject's personality. This is what people expect to see when they see this page." Many of these new co-ops became the basis of the oligarchical system that continues to control power in Russia today. In fact, the term “private property” was never even used. As William Taubman, historian and author of Gorbachev: His Life and Times, notes, “This was a way of introducing private enterprise without calling it that.” Not since the short-lived New Economic Policy of Vladimir Lenin, instituted in 1922 after the Russian civil war, had aspects of free-market capitalism been permitted in the U.S.S.R.īut even here, Gorbachev tread lightly. This incentivized them to aim for profits, but it also went against the strict price controls that had been the bedrock of Soviet economic policies.
